1933 – Swedish ophthalmologist Henrik Samuel Conrad Sjögreen (1899–1986) defended his doctoral thesis, Zur Kenntnis der Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, using Rose Bengal to help characterise keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and arguing it often reflected a broader systemic disorder later known as Sjögren syndrome.
